What I would NEVER say is that it's the "gold standard". If someone said they had $800 or so for a one and only AR and they asked my opinion about going with a 6920, I'd say that's not a bad choice. It's a very good base rifle, built to specs that reflect very acceptable material, durability and performance standards. So is the 6920 the "gold standard" AR? Certainly not. That could not have stood in greater contrast to Colts response to the sun setting of the AWB. People often rag on Bushmaster, but I recall, literally the day of the AWB sunset, and on Bushmasters homepage was a HUGE celebratory announcement that all previously banned features were ready for immediate order as parts or complete guns. Those restrictive roll marks, who some people seem to crave, are nothing less than a statement of policy from Colt as to who should own a 6920 and who should not (you, civilian), despite the AWB being lifted. Letters from Colt were sent stating this. Colt literally told dealers to NOT SELL the 6920 to civilians or they'd run the risk of losing future Colt orders.
To add further to Colt's often short sighted history was after the end of the AWB in 2004. From bolts, to barrels, to coatings, to rail systems, attachment methods, triggers, stocks, monolithic uppers, muzzle devices.just about every aspect of the AR platform has been improved upon by others.

They failed to innovate and they failed to take seriously other companies who devoted themselves to bettering the platform. Colt went through a long period where they viewed civilian sales as a very second rate aspect of their business. They were way, WAY behind the innovation curve over the past decade (at least) and in many respects still are. Second of all, Colt rested on its laurels for years and years due to the lucrative military contracts they held. Good for them for getting back up and running, but the cost they've paid in having to do so due to gross mismanagement has been extensive to put it very lightly.
